The grove above Kotë

Rock, wind and one family’s hands.

The Estate grows on a limestone and clay hillside above Kotë, in the Himarë municipality on Albania’s southern coast. The soil is thin, the summers are dry and the wind comes straight off the sea. Trees that have to work this hard for water give less fruit, and the fruit they give is concentrated: greener, more peppery, more alive.

Skender planted more than a thousand trees here in tribute to his father, Hydo, and he still harvests them by hand each October. The olives go to a local mill and are pressed within twenty-four hours, first cold pressed, never blended. His son brings the oil to the UK and bottles it in Somerset.

I planted every tree by hand, in tribute to my father Hydo. Each one carries his name, his memory, his love for this land.

Tasting notes

What you will taste

Pour a little on a spoon or a piece of plain bread, and take it in three stages.

  1. Fresh-cut grass and green almond

The first thing you notice when you open the bottle: a bright, green smell of the grove in October, with a soft almond note behind it.

  2. Artichoke and a gentle bitterness

On the tongue it turns savoury and vegetal, with a clean bitterness that tells you the fruit was picked by hand at the right moment.

  3. A peppery warmth at the back of the throat

The catch in the throat that makes you cough is the oleocanthal: the sign of oil pressed the day it is picked. Supermarket oil rarely has it.

Great olive oil. I visit Albania quite often and this brings back that authentic Albanian flavour every time I use it. Fresh and delicious. Buying again for sure.

Questions about The Estate

Should I choose the 250ml or the 500ml?

Same oil, same harvest, same dark green glass. The 250ml is the one to try first, or to give; the 500ml is for the kitchen table once you know you love it.

When does the new harvest arrive?

We pick and press every October in Kotë. The new oil then travels to Somerset, where it is bottled, so each harvest reaches the shop in the weeks after. Join the list at the bottom of this page to hear the day it lands.

Why green glass?

Light and heat are what spoil olive oil. Dark green glass keeps the light out, so the oil in your kitchen tastes the way it did at the mill. Keep it somewhere cool, away from the hob, with the cap on.

Why is the oil cloudy, or why is there sediment?

The Estate oil is unfiltered. The fine particles of olive that settle in the bottle carry aroma and polyphenols. It is natural and safe. Let the bottle rest, or turn it gently before pouring.

Does it make a good gift?

Yes. The twin pack is made for giving, and a bottle of The Estate in dark green glass looks the part on any table. Every order is dispatched from Somerset.

What about delivery and returns?

Orders are dispatched from Somerset. Full details are on our delivery and returns and refunds pages. You can also buy on Amazon if you prefer.
